In June 2007, I had the opportunity to see the exhibition of the work of Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA, Tokyo) at Stockholm Museum of Architecture. What particularly impressed me was their method of handling space. I was particularly intrigued as to how their buildings function in real life.

The School of Management and Design is the first new building constructed by SANAA in Europe. The building was completed in summer 2006. In October 2007, when we came to Essen to film the video, the school has a year of "lived experience" behind it. (Wim Wenders, German film director filmed his latest film - The Palermo Shooting - at Zollverein School a week before us.) Our video is based on interviews with people, who were or have been in everyday’s contact with the school.

The School of Management and Design is a part of former mine Zeche Zollverein revivaving programme in general context. Zollverein has been a part of UNESCO World Heritage List since December 2001. The revival programme is mainly focused on culture and design. Famous architects were invited to cooperate: Zollverein Master Plan and Museum of Cultural and Natural History were designed by Rem Koolhaas and Floris Alkemade (OMA); Design Center of North Rhine-Westfalia was designed by Sir Norma Foster (Foster + Partners).
